Gospel Recording Artist and Pastor, Tonex, Discusses His Sexuality...

During an astonishing testimony in an exclusive interview on The Lexi Show, Gospel Recording Artist and Pastor, Tonex, (real name Anthony Williams) lays to rest years of speculation about his sexuality and admitted he is attracted to men. When Lexi attempts to clarify if he is a practicing homosexual, the radical artist declares he is a “free spirit.” Among many candid details, in the following clip, Tonex acknowledges he had a nervous breakdown, says he does not blame his interest in men on being molested, that he believes in “same sex covenants” and that he wants to be a dad someday.

Check Out The Story I Did For The Advocate on Interracial Dating In The LGBT Community...

It's Not You, It's Your Color
Author Terrance Dean examines the intricacies of being a black gay man in a white gay dating world.

In the rainbow flag that supposedly represents the beautiful unifying colors of the LGBT community, the colors are separated for a reason. Just like the Mason-Dixon line, gay blacks and whites seem to share a boundary -- they do not see eye-to-eye, nor are they willing to date outside their race. Sound like the 1960s?
Well, in a modern twist on an old paradigm, peruse any social gay dating website and one will turn up loaded “preferential” or discriminatory profiles from black men stating "no white men,” and white men in similar fashion stating “no black men.”
It seems like the good ol’ boys of yesteryear -- those of all types who don’t take too kindly to interracial mixing -- are gay too. And, it’s no secret. Silently, the community has allowed it to happen, and has just come to accept it. The proof is in the various occasions where you will not find black and white gay men marching defiantly together for LGBT rights -- simply check any local gay pride event, marriage equality rally, or any gathering tied to a hot-button issue. And rarely do we see black and white couples showing public displays of affection while taking a stroll together.

“I think it's part preference and part discrimination,” says Nathan Scott, 37, a professional life coach in New York. “I think for some black men it goes back to slavery. Some men hold on to the past and can’t see themselves with someone who treated our ancestors a certain way."

Scott admits he has previously dated white men, yet the experience took its toll when one former date categorized him by asking, “Why do you guys wear those things on your head?” He was referring to do-rags.

Join Authors Across The Country for the E. Lynn Harris Tribute Tour - I Will Be Hosting In Detroit

On July 23rd, 2009, the publishing world lost author E. Lynn Harris. This month, Karen Hunter Publishing is proud to publish his final novel, MAMA DEAREST (Karen Hunter Publishing; September 22, 2009; $25.99), a story of sex, secrets, and betrayal that features the highly-anticipated return of diva supreme Yancey Harrington Braxton, one of Harris's most popular characters.

Publisher Karen Hunter shares that, “E. Lynn Harris felt that Mama Dearest was the culmination of his life’s work and that this book would be the launch pad to take his already stellar career to a whole other level. It is sad and ironic that he won’t be around to see its success. But I’m certain he will be looking on and smiling at peace knowing that he accomplished something very special.”

E. Lynn Harris was devoted to his fans and was looking forward to touring for MAMA DEAREST. In his memory, his friends and colleagues have volunteered to tour in his memory. On September 22nd, the book will be launched at Outwrite Books in Atlanta, where Lynn lived and often began his tours. Readings will be given by Eric Jerome Dickey, RM Johnson, Tina McElroy Ansa, Clarence Nero, Tracie Howard, and Laura Gilmore. On Friday, September 25th, fellow authors and bookstores across the country will join together to celebrate his memory with “E. Lynn Harris Day.” A complete list of participants and events is below:

Check Out The Story I Did On Doug E. Fresh and Scientology On Essence.com...

Rapper Doug E. Fresh Finds Faith in Scientology
by Terrance Dean

Visit any neighborhood in the Black community and you're bound to find a church on nearly every city block. When it comes to faith-based communities, African Americans are believed to be one of the most religious and spiritual especially those who practice Christianity, Islam, Catholicism, or Judaism. There are even some Buddhists, thanks in part to iconic celebrity, Tina Turner, who introduced Black folk to the religion in her autobiography, "What's Love Got to Do With It." But, when it comes to another religious belief, Scientology, lots of black entertainers are mum.

However, one Hip Hop legend isn't afraid to speak out about being a Scientologist. For eight years, Douglas "Doug E. Fresh" Davis, has been a member of the fastest growing and most controversial religion to come on the scene.

"I am the first Hip Hop artist to do it," said Doug E. Fresh, 42, who was introduced to Scientology through his former girlfriend, Miss Jones, an early 80s R&B singer, former New York and Philadelphia radio personality, and author of the book, "Have You Met Miss Jones?: The Life and Loves of Radio's Most Controversial Diva."

"Isaac Hayes was a former coworker of Miss Jones and he told her about it," said Doug E. Fresh. "I went with her to one of the classes. Miss Jones stopped going but I continued. I found it fascinating. It changed how I thought. I've learned how to look at things and not judge them but respect them and use it in a way that people understand that I respect them, show them love and respect their reality."

Fascinating as it might be, Scientology has received much public scrutiny. Since the religion's inception it has been referred to as a cult that practices black magic and sorcery, along with tales of UFOs and alien spirits inhabiting each human. One of Scientology's most revered and vocal advocates has been A-list celebrity, Tom Cruise. The media has not frayed from their attacks on Cruise and his "odd" behavior blaming it on Scientology. There's his infamous appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in 2005 when Cruise leapt from his seat and jumped up and down on Oprah's sofa declaring his love for his then bride-to-be Katie Holmes. There was also that same year his appearance on "The Today Show" when Cruise criticized actress Brooke Shields for advocating anti-depressant medicine she was using for post-partum depression. He later apologized to Shields, but critics blamed Scientology because of its strict rule of not treating illnesses with drugs.
